Hamilton is an inland city on North Island and the Waikato River runs through the centre. It is most famous for the unusual Hamilton Gardens, which are themed – just two are the American Revolutionist Garden and the Chinese Scholars Garden. You can also visit Hamilton Zoo and the Waikato Museum. The area is good for adventure sports and mountain sports as well as rafting and caving. Take a drive out with your car hire Hamilton to Matamata, where ‘Lord of the Rings’ was filmed and you can visit the village of ‘Hobbiton’. Raglan is a pretty beach town, great for surfing and also head out to Rotorua for the geysers and hotsprings as well as discovering Maori culture.
