South Africa
South Africa Guide
South Africa is at the southern tip of Africa and bordered by Namibia and Botswana as well as Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It has a diverse population, speaking 11 different languages and there are 9 provinces. South Africa is a modern and economically stable part of Africa in direct contrast to the rest of the continent. Due to its rich diversity of nature and cultures it is often described as ‘the world in one country’. It is mostly known for its production of wine and gold, but visitors come for the beautiful landscapes, uncrowded beaches and wildlife parks. Whether you are looking for an adventure on safari or love your food and wine, you will find something special about South Africa.
Most visitors to South Africa, head to Cape Town with the incredible Table Mountain and explore the winelands and amazing scenery the area has to offer. Second in popularity, is the Kruger National Park where you can go on safari and see the ‘big 5’ (and the ‘little 5’!). The park is massive and covers an area larger than the country of Israel and really shows the wild Africa at its best. Durban is the destination of choice for many South Africans as it is a purpose made resort and busy port with beautiful beaches.
An alternative resort and to the south is the coastal town of Port Elizabeth. A popular drive with your car hire South Africa, is the ‘Garden Route’ on the western coast where the roads lie between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean and are perfect for nature lovers. An unusual place for a holiday is the city of Johannesburg, although you may find yourself there on business or for a short visit – if so, a visit to the townships of Soweto is a must! Here you can visit the Mandela Family Museum and the Apartheid Museum. Just outside of the city you can feed cubs at the Lion Park and see how local tribes live at the Lesedi Cultural Village. For something completely different, you can stay at the resort of Sun City – South Africa’s equivalent of Las Vegas. The town of Kimberley is also worth a visit for its diamond mining history and the ‘big hole’. The food and wine of South Africa is some of the best in the world, so during your stay don’t hesitate to sample the wines and the best steaks and seafood you’ll probably ever eat.
