Figueras Guide

Top of your list to visit should be the Theatre Museu Gala which is almost entirely dedicated to Figueras’ famous son, Dali. The building itself is quite spectacular looking like a fabulous pink cake dotted with silver dragees. Elsewhere, look for the St Ferran Castle, a monolithic block of a fortress which has defended the city since the 18th century and is purported to be the largest in Europe. For a gentle afternoon’s stroll, take a walk through the old streets of Figueras and just soak up the history in the stone.

Figueras Directions

Girona Airport is one of Ryanair’s main hubs in Europe and that means plenty of cheap fares from the UK. The airport links to Figueras along the fast E15 road meaning that you can make the journey in a little over twenty minutes.

Hotels Near Figueras Airport

Most of Figueras’ hotels are functional rather than luxurious and whilst you’ll find them basic, they’re comfortable and reasonably priced. The best of the bunch is the Hotel Europa whilst the Enginyapartments are for the budget conscious.

Figueras Info

Figueras is either a large town or a small city but however you describe it, Figueras is packed with history. Beginning with two Roman towns that merged, it didn’t become a force in the region until the 10th century. Then, its position near the French border made it an important trading town and frontier post. In more recent times it was the birthplace of the great painter Salvador Dali whose memory it works hard to preserve in the fabulous museum dedicated to the man.

Figueras Trivia:
  • Figueras, the name of the town, means ‘fig trees’ in Spanish
  • In the local Catalan, the name of the town is Figueres
  • The famous artist, Salvador Dali, was born in Figueras
  • The inventor of the powered submarine was also born there
  • The current Figueras was founded by the Visigoths as they swept through Spain at the end of the Roman Empire
