Sweden Guide
Sweden is the largest country in Scandinavia and shares borders with Norway and Finland. The Oresund Bridge also connects Sweden to Denmark. It is a great place to visit for the outdoors life and activities like cycling and skiing as well as canoeing and hiking. Sweden is divided into 3 main regions.
Norrland is less populated than the rest of Sweden and has a landscape of forests, lakes and mountains. Hiking is a popular pastime in this area as well as skiing at the Are Ski Resort. In Norrland, you will find the industrial towns of Lulea and Sundvall. You could also drive your car hire Sweden to the old town of Gavle with its colourful wooden houses or the university city of Umea, known for its nightlife and creativity. This region is also home to the wilderness of Swedish Lapland.
Svealand is in central Sweden and is home to the capital, Stockholm. Near to the city, you will also find the university town of Uppsala which has the largest cathedral in Scandinavia and was built in the 1200’s. In the town you will also find a castle and botanic gardens as well as the Uppland Museum, an old watermill. You could take a drive out to Ekero and see the Drottningholm Palace or visit the Viking town of Birka.
Gotaland is the area covering the south of Sweden and the islands of Oland and Gotland. Gothenburg and Malmo are the most known cities there. In Gothenburg, you can see the Skansen Kronan and the wooden houses at Haga and also the cathedral. The city has many museums to visit too, including the Gothenburg Art Museum and Gothenburg City Museum. Malmo is home to the ‘turning torso’ the tallest building in Scandinavia. You should also see its three squares in the city centre and the Malmohus Castle.
The islands of Oland and Gotland are most popular for holidaymakers from the mainland. Gotland is the largest island and has many old farms and over 90 churches. Oland has beaches and bike trails, the most famous beach being Boda Sand and next to it the Trolls Forest. You will also find the royal summer residence of Solliden and Borgholm Castle in Oland.
