Izmir is a modern town located around a bay and backed by mountains. Mosques and churches and an 18th century market sit next to modern shopping centres and it has its own character. One of the most well known sights is the clock tower in the centre of Konak Square. Roman ruins can be found at the Agora and you can also visit Kadifekale Castle. Haggle for bargains at the Kemeralti Bazaar and after take a walk along the Korden waterfront and have a coffee at one of the cafes.
