Hannover is a very historic city with an old town dating back to the Middle Ages, although much of this was destroyed during World War II so what you see today is mainly restored buildings giving a “new” old town. The modern city centre, in contrast, was also completely re-built after the war and now houses some of the city's best shops and restaurants.
