Pietermaritzburg Airport Guide

Pietermaritzburg Airport is tiny but has many of the facilities you might need for a short stay on your way to or from the city. There’s a small kiosk selling packaged snacks and drinks although it also has a coffee machine! You can buy newspapers and choose from a small selection of books. There are no banking facilities though so you’ll have to wait until you get into the city before getting currency.

Pietermaritzburg Airport Directions

Turn right onto Oribi Road when you exit the airport and follow this north until it becomes King Edward Avenue. The crossroads with Durban Road is part of the city centre.

Pietermaritzburg Airport Parking

Pietermaritzburg Airport is very small with only one route so it doesn’t need or have much parking. Still, there is plenty to deal with the demand but you’ll find it’s quite informal. You’ll still have to pay but the prices aren’t anything like what you’d expect at the bigger airports.

Pietermaritzburg Airport Flight Information

Pietermaritzburg Airport is very small and has only one flight – from Johannesburg. An alternative is to fly into Durban Airport. Even there it’s mostly domestic flights but travellers from Europe can connect in Dubai to Durban. From the airport it’s around fifty miles to Pietermaritzburg, a journey most easily completed in a hire car collected from the airport.

Hotels Near Pietermaritzburg Airport

We like the Protea Hotel Imperial where for £52 a night you can stay in comfortable modern rooms in a stylish hotel. Elsewhere the Golden Horse Casino Hotel is even more sumptuous and has the benefit of its own casino as part of the complex. There you can expect to pay around £90 a night.

Pietermaritzburg Time Zone

Pietermaritzburg is two hours ahead of GMT and is in the South African Standard Time Zone (GMT+2)

Pietermaritzburg Info

Pietermaritzburg is a nice place to spend a few days but doesn’t generally attract a lot of tourism. The city is best known for its history and culture. It played a pivotal role in the affairs of the Boer nation, being its short-lived capital. It was also where Mahatma Gandhi was thrown off a train and decided he was going to fight racism against Indians. It’s host to the largest brick building in the southern hemisphere and has a good range of galleries and museums. Evenings can be spent in its charming bars and restaurants and for the young at heart there are a couple of nightclubs.

Pietermaritzburg Trivia:

  • The city was founded in 1838 by Voortrekkers and named after one of their leaders
  • It’s the capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province and was once the capital of the Boer Republic
  • The name is often shortened to PMZ or Maritzburg by the locals
  • Mahatma Gandhi evolved his policy of non-violent resistance there
  • The city is home to South Africa’s largest population of Indians
