Car Hire Calpe

Calpe Guide

Calpe is a very historic town on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. It has signs of prehistoric occupation but it was the Romans who developed it. The famous Els Banys de la Reina are the most important remains appertaining to the Roman period and well worth a look. Outside of the town itself, there are great walks to be had along the coast whilst the salt flats where salt was harvested for centuries is now a haven for migratory birds and a favourite haunt of birdwatchers.

Calpe Directions

Hire a car and take the E15 north east from Alicante Airport and you’ll drive straight into Calpe. The journey is around an hour.

Calpe Parking

Alicante Airport has a new car parking facility opened last year. It has spaces for over 2,700 cars in a multi-storey complex which is under a minute from the terminal.

Calpe Flight Information

You’ll find flights from most UK airports to Alicante and even better is that many of the routes are operated by easyJet and Ryanair, saving you money too.

Hotels Near Calpe Airport

Two of the most highly regarded hotels in Calpe are the SH Villa Gadea and the Residencial Terra de Mar but you’ll pay handsomely for their high standards of service. At the other end of the price range the Youth Hostel 4U is also well thought of for cleanliness and value for money.

Calpe Time Zone

Calpe is an hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and is in the Central European Time Zone (GMT+1)

Calpe Info

Calpe has been an important coastal city for hundreds of years and this is evidenced in the range of architecture seen in the city. Outside the city, the extensive salt flats are a haven for birds and birdwatchers alike. Today the city’s economy is based on the small fishing fleet that operates out of its harbour and the growing importance of tourism. It’s a little more refined and quieter than neighbouring Benidorm but lacks some of the facilities.

Calpe Trivia:
  • Calpe developed at its location because of the excellent views from the headlands
  • In fact, the town’s name means ‘headland’
  • The town’s ancient Queen’s Baths date from Roman times
  • Calp Castle was built by the invading Arabs to help hold the town
