Gijon Guide

When the weather is good, it’s time to head to some of Gijon’s beaches with San Lorenzo and Arbeyal being the best. If the weather’s not too good then the city has fantastic Roman ruins in the Campa de Torres.  This is one of the earliest Roman and pre-Roman sites in Western Europe dating back to the 4th century BC.  For more archaeology, visit the restored bath complex at Campa Valdes. For those interested in steam engines, Asturias, nearby, has a small railway museum documenting the history of Spanish railways. Out of the city you’ll find the Santa Catalina Highlands, an area of mountain peaks which once was the location for a military installation that looks out over the city and the bay.

Gijon Directions

Gijon Info

Gijon is a city found on the north coast of Spain and despite having great beaches; the wetter oceanic climate means that it attracts fewer tourists. Once a great industrial city, it’s now focusing on services and in particular, tourism although its large port is very busy with passenger and cargo traffic. Outside the city, the mountains are beautiful and have several ski slopes for winter visitors.

Gijon Trivia:
  • The original development here was called Cimadevilla
  • The city keeps its sports facilities open all night so young people have an alternative to being on the streets
  • The sports club called Covadonga has the largest membership in Spain at over 28,000
  • From 2012 there will be a ferry from Gijon to the UK ports of Poole and Portsmouth
