Car Hire Leon

Leon Guide

The most popular place for tourists in Leon is the huge cathedral. It has some of the most remarkable stained glass windows in Europe and is breath-taking. Try some of the other historic churches too such as the Collegiate Church of San Isodoro with its beautifully decorated Pantheon of the Kings next door. The city also has arguably Spain’s most impressive parador; the Hospital de San Marcos. If you’ve got a hire car, take a trip out to Astorga where you can see one of Gaudi’s least known but most unusual works; the Bishop’s Palace.

Leon Directions

Leon is south of its nearest airport at Asturias. To get there in a hire car, take the AP66 south for 110 km, about 75 minutes’ drive and you’ll be there. To get in from the UK you’ll have to use the only route; easyJet’s Stansted to Asturias flight but at least you’re getting it cheap!

Leon Info

Leon is a very important historic city that has been at the forefront of much of Spain’s history. From early beginnings as a Roman encampment, it led the campaign to wrest Spain from Moorish control early in the second millennia and was one of the first cities to rise in the Spanish War of Independence. Its many UNESCO accredited buildings and its position on the way of St James, marks it out as a popular tourist destination.

Leon Trivia:
  • The city began as a semi-permanent encampment of a Roman legion in 29BC
  • It was a key partner in the retaking of Spain from the Moors in the 10th Century
  • It held Europe’s first ever parliament in 1188 under King Alfonso IX
  • The city is located on the Camino de Santiago and is visited by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela
