Plasencia Guide

People visit Plasencia mainly for the architecture and history. Begin with a walk around the remaining walls of the city then walk into the atmospheric old town where you’ll see the two adjoining cathedrals. One was built after the other as a replacement but then not finished causing the two to share parts of each other’s building. It’s an interesting jumble of buildings and architectural styles. Visit the remains too of the old Roman aqueduct which supplied water to the city.

Plasencia Directions

Plasencia is a long way from any major airport and the closest is Salamanca, over an hour away. The journey is quite simple and rewarding for it passes through the rugged terrain of the Extremadura region. From the airport look out for signs to the E803 and following this south west you’ll see the fortified walls of Plasencia in the distance.

Plasencia Info

Plasencia is a very historic city in the west of Spain, not too far from the Portuguese border. The city has been the home of much strategic politics over the centuries and was fought over by the Moors and Christians remaining in Moorish hands for only a year. Today, whilst a tranquil market city, it’s beginning to draw in more tourists looking for the historic and archaeological sights and as a base for exploring the rugged Extremadura region of Spain.

Plasencia Trivia:
  • Plasencia is a famous walled city in the Extremadura region
  • It grew due to its position on the so-called ‘silver route’ along which silver was exported to the rest of Europe
  • It was founded in 1186 by King Alfonso VIII of Castile
  • The city is unusual in having two adjacent cathedrals that share facilities
